Dubai Airport Duty Free: What's Worth Buying and What's Just Shiny

Dubai's duty free is massive, open around the clock and full of promos. It's also designed to make tired travelers spend. Here's what's actually worth your layover money.

Dubai International's duty free is enormous. It runs through multiple concourses, it never closes, and at 3 a.m. after a long-haul flight it feels like a shiny casino for jet-lagged people. I've passed through many times. Here's my honest guide.

What's genuinely good value

**Fragrance.** Dubai is one of the better places in the world to buy designer perfume. Prices are often below US retail, and bundle promotions on fragrance are common.

**Spirits in liters.** Competitive pricing on whisky, cognac and gin, especially with multi-buy deals. Check your onward connection rules first.

**Gold.** Dubai is famous for gold, and airport gold prices are tied to the daily gold price plus a making charge. Compare the making charge between counters.

**Dates and local sweets.** Cheap, delicious, and better gifts than another keychain.

What's just fine

**Electronics.** Prices are similar to US retail, sometimes higher. Warranty and power plug differences make it not worth it for most travelers.

**Watches.** You'll see every brand. Prices are fair but not always lower than home. Research before you go.

What to skip

**Generic souvenirs.** Overpriced and the same as in any airport.

**Chocolate in bulk.** Fine for gifts, but supermarket chocolate back home is usually cheaper.

Layover tips

  • Pay in local currency (dirhams), not dollars. The dollar option at the register uses a worse rate.
  • Keep your boarding pass handy. You'll need it at checkout.
  • If you're connecting again, liquids will come in a sealed bag. Don't open it until your final destination.
  • The terminals are huge. Check how far your gate is before you start browsing.

How the promotions work

Dubai Duty Free runs regular promos like a percentage off on certain categories or anniversary sales. Some promos apply to spirits, others to fragrance. Ask at the counter. They're not always clearly posted.

Online reserve

You can browse and reserve some products online before you fly and pick them up at the airport. It's handy if you know what you want and want to avoid a last-minute rush.

Verdict

Buy fragrance, spirits and gold if you've checked prices. Skip electronics and generic souvenirs. And watch the clock. Dubai's duty free is designed to make you lose track of time, and gates close earlier than you'd think.
